Wasp Nest Removal
German Wasp / European Wasp, Common Wasp
If you have a wasp nest in your house, outbuilding or garden the chances are it’s the Common Wasp (Vesopula Vulgaris) or the German / European Wasp (Vespula Germanica).
The adult winged workers are 10-20 mm long and have a distinctive black and yellow colouration, not to be confused with the Honeybee’s dark brown/pale orange banded colouration.< The Queen wasp emerges in mid-April from hibernation looking for a new nest site for a colony, often in loft spaces, eaves and cavity walls. The first brood of 10-20 adult workers (sterile females) will increase to 5,000 to 10,000 individuals during the summer. The workers can often be heard making a scraping noise in attics as they chew dried wood and mix it with saliva to increase the size of the nest. Wasp nests can make a resonating noise as the workers use their wings to fan air around the nest to regulate its temperature. A wasp nest in the home or business is not only a nuisance, getting stung is painful but multiple stings on the head or around the airways can be very serious. Wasp stings in the throat account for 50% of all fatalities caused by venomous animals. In rare cases a single sting can induce an anaphylactic shock (an extreme allergic to the toxins in the wasp's venom) which without rapid medical attention via epinephrine (adrenaline) can result in death. Wasps also have the potential to transmit disease as they visit dustbins, waste depots and dead animals (carrion).
Wasp Nest Treatment
Wasp nests are treated by injecting an insecticide dust into the entrance of a nest. This can take between 2 and 24 hours to kill the nest, depending on it’s size. Indigo Pest Control have specialist equipment to treat, remove and destroy wasp nests, up to 9 meters from the ground.
After a wasp nest has been injected with the professional use only dust, the wasps may become agitated. We advise customers to keep away from the area around the treated wasp nest until no wasp activity is seen. It may also be an added precaution to close any windows / doors near the wasp nest and keep pets away from the nest after it has been treated.
Wasp Nest Removal
The majority of wasp nests do not need to be physically removed after they have been treated as all the wasps will be permanently killed off. Many wasp nests are completely inaccessible, as they are located in roof voids and cavity walls. Unlike honey bees, wasps only use a wasp nest once. It can take several hours for all the wasps in a nest to be killed. If you require the nest to be removed and it is accesable this can be done on a second visit, when the nest is completely dead and safe to remove.
Professional and Safe Wasp Nest Removal
We recommend, avoiding DIY products for wasp nest removal. Wasps can quickly become aggressive. With many thousands of workers in the nest they are a potential ticking time bomb, ready to sting multiple times.
Indigo Pest Control have all the necessary access and application equipment to deal with your wasp nest, but more importantly full protective suits with veils. So don’t get stung, call Indigo Pest Control for a quick, prompt, professional, affordable wasp nest removal service.
