Foxes
Foxes are Canines, belong to the Dog family and are commonly spotted in both rural and urban settings. They create their dwellings by excavating holes in the earth, often referred to as ‘earths’. Foxes are opportunistic feeders and sustain themselves by consuming a variety of wild foods such as berries, small mammals, insects, worms, and fruit mixed with bird food, as well as scavenging for refuse and carrion.
Foxes living in the wild have an average life span of 2 years. They start mating in January and February, which leads to some disturbance due to their barking and screaming. In March, litters of about five cubs are born. The cubs are weaned at 5 weeks old but might continue to stay with their mother for 3 to 4 months.
Humans and foxes can often coexist peacefully however there are situations when foxes may need to be controlled or managed. These situations can include; predation of livestock and pets, damage to property and fouling.
Fox control and management can include; repellants, trapping, shooting and exclusion.
